The bloodstained, bullet-pocked sash worn by the late Pope John Paul II during the failed 1981 attempt on his life is venerated as a relic in Poland. Even before the beatification on Sunday of the Polish-born pontiff -- the penultimate step to sainthood -- Poles already consider him 'their' saint, and many flock to the revered Shrine of Jasna Gora in Czestochowa, central Poland, to pay homage.
